An eccentric contraction refers to the controlled lengthening of a muscle while under tension. This occurs when a muscle actively resists an external force that causes it to stretch. Instead of relaxing, the muscle contracts to decelerate or regulate joint movement initiated by an outside load, such as gravity or external resistance.
