Thumb osteoarthritis is a common condition, particularly among adults over the age of 50. It affects the carpometacarpal (CMC) joint, located at the base of the thumb. Thumb osteoarthritis occurs when the cartilage that cushions the ends of bones in the CMC joint wears down over time. Without this protective layer, bones rub against each other, leading to inflammation, pain, and reduced mobility.
