Abdominal separation, also known as diastasis recti or rectus abdominis diastasis, refers to the widening of the gap between the left and right sides of the rectus abdominis muscle. This condition develops when the connective tissue (linea alba) stretches and thins, typically due to increased intra-abdominal pressure.
