Velpeau Wrist Brace with Thumb Support for Greater Stability
The Velpeau Wrist Brace with Thumb Support is our more substantial wrist support for people who require greater wrist stability or additional control of the thumb. Its longer, structured design combines aluminium wrist splints with an independent removable thumb stabiliser, helping control unwanted wrist and thumb movement while leaving the fingers free for everyday tasks.
This makes the Velpeau particularly useful when a standard wrist-only brace does not provide enough support, or when symptoms involve both the wrist and thumb. It may be suitable for conditions such as De Quervain’s tenosynovitis, wrist and thumb tendon irritation, selected sprains, carpal tunnel symptoms and rehabilitation following certain wrist or thumb injuries.
Structured Wrist Support
Two aluminium alloy splints provide external support through the wrist and help limit excessive wrist flexion and extension. Additional support through the back of the hand helps maintain a comfortable wrist position while allowing normal movement of the fingers.
The longer design extends further along the wrist and forearm than a lightweight everyday wrist brace. This provides a more substantial level of support when greater control of wrist movement is required.
Removable Thumb Stabiliser
A major advantage of this wrist brace with thumb support is the independent thumb stabiliser. The removable thumb splint and adjustable straps can be used when additional control of thumb movement is required.
This can be particularly useful for conditions affecting the thumb side of the wrist, including De Quervain’s tenosynovitis, selected thumb sprains and irritation of the tendons surrounding the wrist and thumb.
When thumb immobilisation is not required, the removable component provides greater flexibility and allows the brace to be used primarily as a structured wrist support.
Comfortable Padded Construction
More substantial wrist braces can become uncomfortable when worn for extended periods. The Velpeau Wrist Brace uses soft internal padding together with breathable materials to improve comfort while maintaining the required level of support.
The brace is manufactured without neoprene or latex and uses adjustable hook-and-loop straps, allowing the fit and compression to be modified according to wrist size and individual comfort.
When May a Wrist Brace with Thumb Support Be Useful?
The Velpeau Wrist Brace with Thumb Support may be considered for:
- De Quervain’s tenosynovitis
- Wrist sprains and strains
- Selected thumb sprains and ligament injuries
- Wrist or thumb tendinitis and tenosynovitis
- Carpal tunnel symptoms where wrist positioning is helpful
- Wrist pain associated with repetitive activity or exercise
- Selected stable wrist injuries where bracing has been recommended
- Support following removal of a cast or splint when advised by your treating practitioner
- Selected post-operative rehabilitation when recommended by your surgeon or physiotherapist
Velpeau or Breathable Wrist Brace: Which Should You Choose?
Our two wrist braces serve different purposes. If your symptoms are primarily located at the wrist and you want to keep your thumb completely free, our Breathable Wrist Brace provides excellent everyday wrist support. The Velpeau is the more appropriate option when greater wrist stability or additional thumb support is required.
| Velpeau Wrist Brace with Thumb Support | Breathable Wrist Brace |
|---|---|
| Wrist + removable thumb support | Wrist support only |
| Longer, more substantial design | Shorter, lightweight design |
| Aluminium wrist splints + thumb stabiliser | Removable wrist stays |
| Can restrict thumb movement when required | Thumb remains completely free |
| Suitable when greater wrist stability is required | Excellent for general everyday wrist support |
| Preferred option when wrist and thumb support are both required | Preferred option when only the wrist requires support |
Which one should you choose? If you need wrist support but want unrestricted thumb movement, consider our Breathable Wrist Brace. If your condition involves the thumb side of the wrist, such as De Quervain’s tenosynovitis, or you have been advised to restrict both wrist and thumb movement, the Velpeau provides the greater level of support.
Why Choose the Velpeau Wrist Brace?
- Greater wrist stability: Aluminium splints provide structured support and help control excessive wrist movement.
- Optional thumb support: The removable thumb stabiliser allows the brace to accommodate conditions involving both the wrist and thumb.
- Longer design: Support extends further along the wrist and forearm than a lightweight wrist brace.
- Free finger movement: The wrist and thumb can be supported while leaving the fingers available for everyday tasks.
- Adjustable fit: Hook-and-loop straps allow the level of support and compression to be individually adjusted.
- Padded construction: Soft internal padding improves comfort during extended wear.
- Neoprene and latex free: Designed without these commonly used brace materials.

Our Physiotherapist Recommendation
At Sydney Physio Clinic, we consider this style of brace particularly useful when both wrist stability and thumb support are required. The combination of structured wrist splinting and a removable thumb stabiliser makes it particularly suitable for conditions involving the thumb side of the wrist, such as De Quervain’s tenosynovitis.
However, greater immobilisation is not automatically better. If your symptoms involve the wrist only and you do not need to restrict thumb movement, our lighter Breathable Wrist Brace may be the more practical and comfortable choice.
The appropriate amount of immobilisation also changes during rehabilitation. As symptoms improve, gradually restoring movement and strength may become more important than continued bracing.
