Professional Pain Relief with the Physio TENS Machine

The Physio TENS Machine is our premium TENS unit, designed for people wanting a complete and convenient pain management system for regular home use. Supplied in a protective hard carry case, it provides a practical way to organise and store your machine, leads and electrode pads between treatments.

TENS, short for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation, delivers small electrical impulses through electrodes placed on the skin. These impulses stimulate nerve pathways and may help reduce the perception of pain without the use of medication.

The Physio TENS Machine may be useful for people managing persistent or recurring musculoskeletal pain, including back pain, neck pain, osteoarthritis and sporting injuries.

If you’re looking for a more affordable and compact option for straightforward everyday use, compare our Home TENS Machine.

Understanding TENS Machines

A TENS machine is a portable electronic device used as a non-invasive, drug-free option for managing pain. Electrodes are positioned on the skin around or near the painful area, allowing controlled electrical stimulation to be delivered through the tissues.

TENS may be used as part of the management of both acute and persistent pain. Treatment intensity can be adjusted according to individual comfort and the type of symptoms being managed.

Benefits of Using a TENS Machine for Pain Relief

  1. Non-Invasive: TENS therapy provides electrical stimulation through pads placed on the skin without injections or medication.
  2. Adjustable: TENS machines allow users to alter treatment intensity and other parameters according to comfort and treatment goals.
  3. Portable: The compact design allows treatment at home, work or while travelling.
  4. Versatile: TENS may be incorporated into the management of a wide range of painful musculoskeletal conditions.

How Does a Physio TENS Machine Work?

When electrodes are positioned on the skin, electrical impulses produced by the TENS machine stimulate nerves around the treatment area. This stimulation may influence pain in several ways:

  1. Pain Gate Control: Electrical stimulation may interfere with pain signals travelling towards the brain, helping reduce the perception of discomfort during treatment.
  2. Natural Pain Modulation: Certain forms of TENS stimulation may influence the body’s natural pain-modulating systems.
  3. Muscle Comfort: Some people find electrical stimulation assists with the sensation of muscular relaxation and reduces discomfort associated with tight or tired muscles.

How to Use a Physio TENS Machine Effectively

  1. Placement of Electrodes: Correct electrode placement is important. Pads are commonly positioned around the painful area or along relevant nerve pathways. Keep pads at least one pad-width apart and do not overlap them. If you’re unsure where to position your electrodes, seek advice from your physiotherapist or other treating healthcare professional.
  2. Start with Low Settings: Begin with a low intensity and gradually increase until you feel a strong but comfortable tingling sensation. TENS should not feel painful or unpleasant.
  3. Duration of Use: A common starting point is approximately 20–30 minutes. Treatment duration can then be adjusted according to your symptoms, response and advice from your healthcare professional.
  4. Consistency: Some people find regular TENS use more helpful than occasional treatment. Frequency of use should be guided by your symptoms and individual management plan.

Settings by Pain Type

The following settings provide general guidance for common TENS applications. Individual requirements vary. If relief fades during treatment, a small increase in intensity or a program that varies frequency or pulse width may help.

Acute Pain (Recent Sprain, Strain, Post-Operative Pain or Flare-Up)

  • Mode: Conventional / High Frequency
  • Frequency: 80–120 Hz (approximately 50–130 Hz may be used)
  • Pulse Width: 50–200 μs
  • Intensity: Strong but comfortable tingling without painful stimulation
  • Time: Approximately 20–30 minutes

Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain (Back Pain, Neck Pain, Osteoarthritis)

  • Option A – Conventional / High Frequency: 80–120 Hz, 100–200 μs, strong comfortable intensity for approximately 30 minutes.
  • Option B – Low Frequency: 2–4 Hz, 200–400 μs with stronger stimulation. Gentle muscle twitching may occur with some settings. Treatment is commonly performed for approximately 30 minutes.

Neuropathic or Nerve-Related Pain (Shooting, Burning or Tingling Symptoms)

  • Mode: Conventional / High Frequency
  • Frequency: 80–120 Hz
  • Pulse Width: 100–200 μs
  • Intensity: Strong but comfortable
  • Time: Approximately 30 minutes

Care & Electrode Pad Maintenance

  • Turn the TENS machine off before removing electrode pads.
  • Return the pads to their plastic liner after treatment and store them in a clean sealed pouch.
  • Replace pads when they begin losing adhesion or stimulation feels uneven.
  • Keep the device and leads clean using a soft, slightly damp cloth. Do not immerse electrical components in water.

TENS Machine Troubleshooting

  • No sensation: Check that the cables are fully inserted, pads are securely adhered to clean dry skin and the intensity has been gradually increased.
  • Stinging or sharp sensation: Reduce the intensity and check that the electrode pads are making full contact with the skin. Worn pads may require replacement.
  • Relief fades during treatment: Gradually increase intensity slightly or consider switching to a modulated treatment program.
  • One electrode feels stronger: Check both pads are fully adhered. If the pads are worn, replace them as a pair.

Home TENS Machine or Physio TENS Machine?

Replacement TENS Pads

Electrode pads naturally lose adhesion with repeated use. Replacing worn pads helps maintain consistent contact with the skin and comfortable electrical stimulation.

Our Premium Replacement TENS Pads are compatible with both the Physio TENS Machine and Home TENS Machine, making it easy to keep replacement pads on hand when required.

Why Choose the Physio TENS Machine?

The Physio TENS Machine is our premium option for customers wanting a complete TENS setup that can be neatly stored and protected between treatments. The hard carry case makes it particularly convenient for people who expect to use their machine regularly or want to keep the device, leads and pads organised together.

For customers simply wanting a reliable TENS machine for occasional or everyday home use, our Home TENS Machine provides an excellent lower-cost alternative.

The information provided on this page is general in nature and should not replace personalised medical advice. TENS may not be suitable for everyone. Seek professional advice before use if you have an implanted electronic device, are pregnant, have altered sensation, epilepsy, significant cardiovascular disease or another medical condition that may affect safe electrical stimulation.
