Effectively Remove Sports Strapping Tape
Strapping tape is widely used in sports and physiotherapy to support and protect joints, reduce pain, and improve performance. But removing it can sometimes be both tricky and painful. Whether you’re an athlete or recovering from an injury, knowing how to remove strapping tape without damaging your skin is important.
How Long Should You Leave Strapping Tape On?
Strapping tape should typically be left on for no more than 24 hours. Most professionals recommend removing it within 12 to 18 hours. The longer it stays on, the more likely your skin will become irritated or damaged. We would typically suggest if you are taping a joint for athletic performance then once the training/event is over, remove it ASAP.
If you’re using tape for ongoing support, it’s better to reapply fresh tape each day rather than wearing the same strapping for multiple days. As prolonged exposure is more likely to lead to skin irritation and the effectiveness of any taping with wane given time and exposure to forces. Always check with a physiotherapist if you’re unsure about the appropriateness of leaving tape on for an extended period.
What Happens If You Leave Tape On Too Long?
Leaving strapping tape on too long can lead to several issues.
- The adhesive can irritate your skin, especially if you sweat under the tape. Prolonged wear can also block air flow, causing skin to break down or develop rashes. In some cases, it may even lead to allergic reactions or blisters. And in extreme cases these reactions may lead to local infection.
Watch for signs of redness, itchiness, or discomfort. If you notice any of these, it’s best to remove the tape as soon as possible.
- Prolonged exposure may also lead to softening of the underlying skin. And as a result the pulling of the tape whilst in place or on removal may be more likely to damage the skin.
Generally in both these situations the reaction is mild and the skin recovers farily quickly. However what it can mean is that reapplication of taping has to be delayed. Which can be an issue if there are several matches or training sessions in quick succession that require strapping support.
Can You Sleep With Strapping Tape On?
Sleeping with strapping tape on is generally safe if it’s applied correctly and there are no signs of skin irritation. However, it’s not advisable to sleep with it for multiple nights in a row, as prolonged use increases the risk of side effects.
During warmer months, night sweating can weaken the adhesive and trigger skin reactions. If you’re unsure whether to keep the tape on overnight, it’s best to remove it before bed and reapply it in the morning. In most cases, overnight taping offers little benefit and serves mainly as a convenience. Letting the skin breathe at night is typically the better option.
If you’re using a non-elastic tape, such as rigid sports strapping tape on a swollen joint like a sprained ankle, be especially cautious not to apply it too tightly. Rigid tape doesn’t allow for swelling, which can push fluid into other areas like the forefoot and toes. For this reason, I usually don’t recommend keeping rigid tape on overnight when managing swelling.
Can You Shower With Strapping Tape?
Many strapping tapes are water-resistant, but most are not designed to handle full immersion or drenching in showers. Water weakens the adhesive, which may reduce the tape’s effectiveness. Moisture trapped under the tape can also lead to skin problems.
If you need to keep the tape on while showering, cover the area with a waterproof wrap or tape protector. After showering, dry the area thoroughly and monitor the tape’s condition.
Best Methods for How to Remove Strapping Tape
When it’s time to remove the tape, doing it the right way can prevent pain and skin damage. Here are the best methods:
- Slow Peeling: Start at a corner and slowly peel the tape back over itself. Don’t pull it straight up. Pulling in the direction of hair growth reduces discomfort.
- Use an Adhesive Remover: You can buy skin-safe adhesive removers from pharmacies or sports stores. Spray or wipe it along the edge as you peel. This breaks down the glue for easier removal.
- Warm Water and Soap: Soaking the taped area in warm water or applying a wet towel helps loosen the adhesive. Add mild soap to soften the tape further.
- Oil-Based Solutions: Baby oil or olive oil can also break down the adhesive. Rub a small amount onto the tape and let it sit for a few minutes before peeling it off slowly.
- When removing tape on the side of a sports field after the match or session. Immediate removal when the underlying skin is sweaty can also make for easier removal. If this proves challenging using the slow peeling method above then it is probably best to use the other removal methods mentioned when home.
Remember to wash and moisturize the skin after tape removal. If you see any irritation, give your skin a break before reapplying tape.
When to Seek Help
If the tape won’t come off easily or you notice signs of an allergic reaction, don’t force it. Speak with a medical professional or physiotherapist for help. Also, if you have sensitive skin or conditions like eczema, consult a healthcare provider before using strapping tape or at the very least perform a patch test before full application.
Knowing how to remove strapping tape properly is just as important as knowing how to apply it. By following the right steps and paying attention to your skin’s reaction, you can keep using tape safely and effectively.
