Understanding Hypafix and Its Role
Hypafix tape, also commonly known as fixomull tape is a fixation tape.
- It is a flexible, self-adhesive fabric designed for secure dressing fixation.
- It is made of a non-woven polyester material and coated with a hypoallergenic adhesive that ensures minimal skin irritation.
Thanks to its soft texture and breathable design, Hypafix is widely used in hospitals, clinics, and home care settings to support wound management and post-surgical healing.
As well as being used in wound care it is used in physio practices as a taping option for individuals with tape allergies. Either used under standard rigid sports strapping tape, or on its own as an alternative to classic taping.
What is fixomull tape used for?
Fixomull and Hypafix are brand names of this style of fixing tape.
- Primarily used to hold wound dressings, catheters, and medical tubing in place. Unlike traditional medical tapes, it covers a wider area and distributes tension more evenly across the skin. This makes it ideal for sensitive or delicate areas of the body, such as joints or bony prominences.
- Due to its hypoallergenic properties it is frequently used in sports taping as a barrier with patients who react to the adhesives in rigid sports tape.
- It can also be used to prevent blisters and irritation from friction on the skin.
How long can you leave fixation tape on?
The duration Hypafix should remain on the skin depends on the clinical context. In general, it can stay in place for up to several days, as long as it remains clean, dry, and securely adhered. If it starts to peel, becomes wet, or the underlying dressing needs changing, it should be replaced promptly.
For post-surgical dressings, medical guidance often recommends changing Hypafix every 2 to 3 days, or sooner if there are signs of irritation or contamination.
Can you put fixation tape on open wounds?
Hypafix tape is not applied directly onto open wounds. Instead, it is used to secure a primary dressing that covers the wound.
- The tape’s role is to keep the sterile dressing in place without shifting or causing unnecessary pressure.
Applying Hypafix directly onto an open wound could interfere with healing and increase the risk of infection. As well as potentially reopen the wound on removal.
Always ensure that an appropriate wound dressing, such as gauze or an absorbent pad, is applied first. Then Hypafix can be used to gently secure that dressing.
Why choose Hypafix over standard tape?
Because of its versatility, Hypafix is commonly found in emergency kits, and sports team gear bags. One of the key advantages of Hypafix is its hypoallergenic adhesive. This feature makes it suitable for patients with sensitive skin or adhesive allergies. Additionally, its stretchable fabric conforms to body contours, making it comfortable during movement.
Traditional tapes can cause pressure points or skin breakdown, especially when applied to curved or mobile areas. Hypafix distributes pressure more evenly, reducing these risks. It also allows the skin to breathe, which is important for longer term use.
Tips for applying Hypafix correctly
Here are some tips for application:
- Clean and dry the skin before applying.
- Cut Hypafix to the required size using sterile scissors.
- Round the edges to prevent peeling. Particularly relevant if prolonged use is likley.
- Avoid stretching the tape too tightly over joints. Pulled tightly there is a chance it may irritate the skin locally at the joint. Or transmit the skin tugging to one of the ends of the fixing tape. Too tight at a moving joint can also cause the tape to pull away from the skin and you ultimately lose adherence.
- Finish off by gently pressing along the edges to secure adhesion.
Removing Hypafix is simple. Slowly peel it back while supporting the surrounding skin to avoid irritation. If needed, use an adhesive remover for sensitive areas.
Hypafix tape provides a reliable, gentle, and flexible method for securing dressings and medical devices. Its hypoallergenic adhesive and breathable fabric make it a top choice for managing wound care and sports taping sensitive individuals.
