What Is Lock Lacing?

Lock lacing is a technique for creating a super-tight finish and is often recommended to help reduce heel slippage when running. A lacing method said to produce extra friction between the laces and your ankle, keeping the ankle and heel area snug and preventing heel slippage in your running shoe. Lock Lacing is also sometimes referred to as “Runner’s Tie”, “Lace Locks” or “Heel Locks”.
Not just exclusive to runners this lock lacing technique is also used in rock climbing to help prevent any movement or twisting of the shoe and speed skaters to help give maximum ankle support.
The method of lock lacing also creates more friction which can help in preventing the tie/knot coming loose especially with shoes possessing slippery synthetic shoelaces.

How Does Lock Lacing Help?

Lock lacing helps prevent heel slippage particularly when running downhill. Many sports shoes actually have twin eyelets at the top to suit lock lacing techniques. The way it works is by pulling the lacing tight using lock lacing techniques the upper of the shoes get pulled into a triangular shape, acting like “pulleys” to provide even greater tightening around your foot in the shoe.
Note: Lock lacing doesn’t’ solve the worlds problems, if you are experiencing a significant amount of heel slippage in your shoes the lock lacing method will only help so much, and it is probably wiser to get some better fitting shoes.

From spending hours on Google searching to seeking professional advice from physiotherapists and podiatrists on the best footwear, yet most people seldom give their lacing method more than a moments thought. It is possible that sometimes those little injuries and blisters you are getting may be because you are simply not tying your shoelaces correctly.

Research has shown tight laces can reduce pronation (the way your foot rolls inward when running). So even when you invest in a pair of stability running shoes, the shoe may not work the way it is designed if your feet aren’t held down properly inside the shoe by a set of tightly fastened laces.

When your ankles and arches aren’t supported by your shoe you can’t maintain an energy efficient running style and your risk of injury is greater. When you have the right runners for your foot type and training needs and they are laced up the right way this can have a positive affect increasing in your running economy and reducing injury risk.

Other Popular Lacing Methods

This lock lacing technique isn’t the only lacing method. In fact, there are many others to suit different foot types and problems, including the use volume lacing another common lacing technique.
Volume Lacing: If you have a tender spot on the top of your foot, try skipping those eyelets directly over the sensitive area to help avoid placing extra pressure to this area. This volume technique is also good lacing method for runners who experience pins and needles through the top of their feet.
